When 911 happened and those buildings came down how did business account for the missing money that was in the banks located there. There is a persistant rumor here that billions was lost in the rubble and thats what is really hurting our economy.Fact or fiction?

There was no gold mine in the Twin Towers. All losses would be covered by insurance most likely . The post pointing out we are talking papers here , stocks and checks and annuities and such is correct. Multiple copies and data on such are kept at multiple locations. We had a large check in transit to our office which was originally thought to have been destroyed . In fact the check made it out alive and arrived in the mail shortly there after.

I just googled "9/11 gold" to see what the tinfoil hat guys are saying nowadays. The largest amount of precious metals I saw mentioned was about a billion dollars worth. We're now 7 years later. A billion dollars lost 7 years ago wouldn't amount to a darn thing in an economy as large as ours, with a GDP approaching $15 trillion.

I think what Northerner was referring to was a variant of the rumor that a large stock of gold was held in one of the towers. I don't recall the details, and never tried to run it down; too many other serious questions about 9/11.

There is a company here that had it's collections run from the WTC. An employee told me that they lost a huge sum on 9/11. But it seems to me that they could have just rebilled the customers for the missing payments, which were all in check form.If I had sent a payment that was destroyed, I would have written another check, after putting a stp-payment on the old one. Perhaps I am missing something, but unless there were huge sums of cash or gold involved, I cannot see how the money was just lost.

The "money" was not there. Each share of stock or each unit of similar financial instruments had value based on the prices at which those shares had been sold/bought at the most recent such transaction. When there were more sellers than buyers, the share price dropped. Suppose that rural land near you was typically selling for $3000 per acre. If suddenly most of that land was offered for sale, the price per acre would drop because there would be too few buyers to sustain the previous price level. For financial instruments, the price per share dropped. That is where the "money" went. There are some bargains out there now.

Been watching 'Zeitgeist' I assume?

The 'theory' that the WTC buildings fell as a result of controlled demolition is rather silly to me. Anyone that chooses to watch the video of those collapses can see the building come down floor after floor, typical of a pancake collapse... exactly what the conspiricy crowd argues against.
I'm not sure how you'd go about a controlled demolition of a building of that height and have any idea where it would fall or how it would fall.

'Zeitgeist' at the very least uses some very percarious theories to push their ideas on that one, and I can only imagine that the rest of that 'documentary' are equally accurate.

Stocks collapsed quite a bit after that day if you recall. Money went everywhere but people's pockets, that's for sure. I don't believe this has anything to do with the current issues in the economy.

Today, we are talking about the same old adage of corporate fraud, pocketing large sums of cash, and the overeager housing market. Of course, you'll remember Enron and Worldcom, both of which were doing deviant things at the time.

The world trade center collapse caused the loss of billions of dollars worth in property value (PLUS PRICELESS LIVES), and ruined speculator hopes in the market for the occupants of the center. This produced an immediate effect, and the economy MAY still be affected by 9/11 (I doubt it), but no one seems to be helping the economic situation in light of recent events.

My two cents
