OFF TOPIC QUESTION # 2: Power bar surge protection on my coumputer ???

Here's another non-tractor question but I know I'll get a good answer. We had a power surge last month and it knocked out the LCD clock and oven control on my stove and I went to the poor house repairing it. My computer survived somehow, maybe because I have a power bar but I somehow doubt it has much of a surge protector inside, it's a real cheap one. Anyways, I have since been switching off the power at the bar in addition to my machine when I turn everything off. I was told by a computer guy that you've got to spend a lot of money (like $75-$100 Cdn) for a good surge protector that really works. Also that a power surge will even get by the main power switch on an inexpensive protector, even if it's turned off. Any comments or suggestions ???

I'd say that surge protectors are not a great answer fro computer protection. For one thing, most of them use MOV's which WEAR OUT! As they absorb spikes, they get worse and worse at doing so.

UPS's are getting cheap enough that I'd say just drop $100-200 for a basic ups for your computer system. The better ones will tell your system to do a gracefull shutdown if the line fails. These are excellent protection because they regenerate ac from a battery. The ac line just charges the battery and is isolated.

Regarding phone lines, a phone line surge protector is the thing. I use one, but cannot attest to its effectiveness. Regarding household appliances- I'd love to get a house-wide protector as someone else suggested.

You can get a power surge protector that also has telephone jack connections. Around $50.00.

Mike, Harvey is right, you need line voltage and telephone protection. We have an office full of computers and protect all of them with APC "surge arrests". See>Link

By>Link the way, we live on the shores of Lake Superior in extreme northern Wisconsin. We don't get a lot of bad storms but when we get one, they can be fierce.

Mike, I've got one that just got hit. It fried the modem connection in the protector, but the computer didn't suffer any damage, modem is fine. Here's the good part. It only cost $20 and they replaced it free of charge where I bought it. It's an RCA brand. The girl where I bought it said so far it is performing just as well as the more expensive models.

Alberta: Lightening does some very strange things and to find SOLID protection is not cheap. Your friends $74-100 isn't too far off but it isn't a total 100percent protection. The internal power supply in your PC has a safety circuit built-in that helps. It all depends how safe you want to feel? I shut off both computer and the $20 power strip when I know there will be lightening...and I also unplug the phone cord going into the modem. Many forget the modem and incomming phone lines. In Canada I would think turning it off during the summer thunder storms will help 99 percent of the time. If ya want more, it will cost.
I have a background in this sort of thing and its not easy to fool mother nature all of the time. I suggest you UNPLUG modem phone line and turn off both power strip and computer. Do your hard drive backups and.. Good luck. harvey.
