i have been insured for years with allstate and have found them to be excellant....
i asked my agent if my farm tractor was covered , he checked and said no...it looks to him that i should change to a farm policy to be covered and allstate doesn't have one, which means changing companys...i hate to change, but i need to be covered.... what is anyone out there doing????? i have a wd and ford 800 i play with on 100 acers and take to "old timers" shows

My policy covers any farming/custom work, on/off road. Because I'm on the road between farms, I have full coverage including for environment damages that might occur (spilled fuel, pesticide, etc). I have to have my tractors appraised first, and my antigue tractors are covered for a maximum of 3 showings. They are not covered for tractor pulling competitions, and if I take them to more than 3 shows, it's extra. They are covered for their appraised value, and since these tractors appreciate, I was advised to update the appraisals periodically. Money well spent IMHO.

Does your insurance company have a toll free phone number??

I don't need any insurance but I would like to call somebody about you parking that tractor in my way over here at Wendy's.

I have 11 tractors includeing two new ones. I have my coverage with Auto Owners insurance co.. Their farm policy is about $50.00 per year extra, but under their home owners policy, they will cover a tractor for hobby farming "if" you keep it around 10 acres or less tillage, at no extra cost. Liability coverage is at a max of one million dollars, but if you do anything for hire, you aren't covered!!!
If all the tractors burn or ??, only one is covered, and that's the one i use for snow plowing ect., and i named it on my policy. There is a ceiling on that amount.
BTW, i have both my 4 wheelers covered for liability, for 15 bucks extra a year!!!! This is with the same million dollar coverage!!!
I was with AllState for many many years, but we had a serious auto accident while with AllState, and they were great untill i got deeper in the company for catastrophic coverage. In this state they have to cover the injury 100% for life, and we now have a paralized family member. I have to fight them every inch of the way. She is paralized from the neck down and needs 24/7/365 care. AllState has been a real battle, and i got sick of their back handed tatics. In serious injury cases they are in the top three for screwing you every way they can!!!
I finally got tired of their lieing, and quit them!!!!

Consider this, is your wife, kids, friends, anyone else driving or standing around these tractors while they are running. What if one person was run over or the tractor blew up and somebody was injurded, or somebody wanted to sue you. I think any price for insurance was worth the price!! Bill

Fortunately I never had to test out my homeowners policy with regards to tractors (to date). My policy states that if I use my tractors to upkeep my home and property it is covered for damage. If it is only a show tractor or used for a business, there is no coverage. My tractors cut the grass and plow the driveway, etc. They are in theory covered.

You said your tractors are covered. Is it tractors, or tractor??? Most home owners policys will cover one tractor, the one you use for plowing snow, mowing grass ect.. IF, more than one burns or ??, only one will be covered, and that one is covered with a max limit. Robert

Sruart: Farmers Insurance Group does NOT cover a farm tractor at all under a "home Owners" policy, I was told. This is in the state of MN. I gave my agent a hard time and he had a district agent call me. No coverage by itself. If it's loaded on a trailer and tied down proper, it is covered. Take it off the trailer and your are NOT covered at all. Gotta have a "Farm" policy or special high priced policy written up. There was suppose to be a company call "gulf" something that was going to start last Spring covering hobby tractor owners? harvey

Phil makes some good points, but missed one that I think is most important.

Liability. If you ever need to drive on the road, or do a favor for a friend off your property, you are setting yourself up for a big fall! Even if you are not at fault, you may lose everything you own.
I have my 8N on my homeowners policy as a 'Utility Vehicle Rider' for my 'homestead' and I am sure that Allstate offers something similar. I am covered on my property and on the road, but not if I take money for a job elsewhere.

Insurance might be OK but try the answer the following questions first!

1. Would a total or partial loss of one or both tractors put an extreme fincial strain on you and your family.(If yes, you need insurance)

2. Since these are older tractors will the insurance pay the face amount or will the value be depreciated to the point that you get nothing?
(This is a VERY important question. Why pay the premium if they will only pay a fraction of the claim)

3. What kind of coverage do you have on your truck and towed vechile (trailer)? This may cover some or all of the value of you load (tractor and or implements) if you are involved in a road accident.

4. Depending on acreage and production, you may need some type of farm/ranch coverage to obtain proper liability coverage. On the other hand if you only have two tractors as a hobby on one or two acres your current homeowners may cover everything (except tractor value) under your present premium.

Farm Bureau, Shelter Insurance and State Farm have farm policies (and maybe others). Check with each one using the present coverage that you have, then add farm or tractor protection to see what the overall cost will be!

Last, I would think Allstate has a Marine policy which may cover personal property such as boats, trailers, and maybe TRACTORS!

Good luck,
