gget #1 on compression the one next to the radiator take offthe cap and see if it is lined up on #1 wire if the rotor is lined up on #1wire you are in time your cap should be marked for #1 why do you think you need to time it has it been apart if the rotor does not line up with #1 ON CAP when on top dead center it will line up on #4 this means you are 1/2 turn of the mag other wise the gears in the mag are not lined up if you have a dist it should line up the same just that there are no gears in the rotor that would be out of time has the engine been apart your crank and cam might not be correct as the cam gear turns the mag drive
