Multiple engine set ups, crankshaft to crankshaft in configuration, have indeed been around for many years. But it was always tough to get them in "synch" with the older mechanical timing set ups. That problem has pretty much been eliminated with the use of electronics. Caterpillar is doing that right now in their 400 ton off highway truck, Model 797. It has two 12 cylinder diesels, 3600 series if I remember correctly that are coupled crankshaft to crankshaft. The technician adjusts the set up with a computer. To date they are working out well.
