The 424s are fairly common here in East Tenn, and most of them are still in use. Also, the 444 and 454 are almost the same. When you go to buy parts for it, be aware that the Mahindra tractors now imported are essentially copies of this series of tractors. Many of the parts will fit and the price is 1/2 to 1/3 of what an IH part will cost. The 424 is a tough old tractor and should give you good service. The 3 pt lift piston wore out on mine. The lift piston used to repair was a Mahindra part. Mine was a gas and there is a solenoid on the carburator to stop gas flow and prevent dieseling when you shut it off. That went bad and had to be replaced. Radiator leaked and was taken off to the radiator shop for repairs. None of these things were serious or very expensive. I was amazed at the power it had. It handled a 6 ft rotary cutter in tall grass with no problem. It used a lot of gas when you did that, however. I had the tractor for about 4 years and came on an opportunity to get a larger move modern tractor. If the 424 I had would have had power steering, I might still have it.
