Farmall A brakes

I'm restoring a 1947 A. I put a new brake band in and when I tighten up the final drive assembly, the band seems to drag. I've removed and re-installed it three times with the same result. It goes together fine and when I took it apart, it looked correct. Does it need running in or am I helpless?
