You can go through a trace to find exactly where the problem is. Try jumpers to a known hot battery. Clean all connections and tighten connectors. Short past the solenoid directly to the starter with the battery hot wire (just touch this cause sparks are gonna fly!). However; since it sounds like you've got a good ol' gal there, go ahead and rebuilt the starter (any good automotive shop). I suggest you replace the old solenoid as well and be done with the job for many years.
