Russell - Firing out the exhaust/carb can mean the distributor's 180 deg out of time. Test by swapping the 3 pairs of plug wires diametrically at the distributor. (ie. swap the wires #1 and #6; #5 and #2; #3 and #4.) Now crank the motor and see what happens.

I did this once on an Oliver 1850 - used the wrong mark and got the distributor gear installed 180 degrees out. Rather than opening the motor and retiming the gear correctly, simply changed the wires at the distributor. Tractor's been running fine for 15+ years...
