Simple explanation: A turbocharger consists of an exhaust turbine and a centrifugal compressor mounted on a common shaft. Exhaust gases leaving the engine spin the turbine which in turn spins the compressor wheel. The compressor wheel compresses (or "boosts") incoming combustion air. Now the higher the pressure the air being fed into the engine, the more oxygen that is delivered and hence the more fuel that can be burned. The more fuel that can be burned, the more power that can be produced by the engine.
