The 504 is a very reliable tractor for it's size. It has five speeds plus the TA = 10 speeds. Is the one you are talking about a International 504 Hi-Clear which is actually a International 504 with Farmall rear axles and wheels and a taller front axle, or is it a Farmall Hi-Clear which is a Farmall with the rear drop axles and tall front axle?
