They were a big after-market item in the 40's and early 50's. M&W, Heisler, and maybe some others built kits which were often dealer-installed, even before the tractors were delivered to the farmer. These units essentially double the speed of the tractor in all gears except 5th gear. It also doubles the speed of your hydraulic pump, and the pto, so some caution is advised there!
These "9-speed" units did make the old H and M models more versatile, especially for light-duty chores like pulling wagons, raking hay, etc. M&W used to advertise that theirs would prolong transmission life by providing better lubrication to the transmission pilot bearing. I don't know if that was true, or not.
