First, you have to get cylinder #1 (the one closest to the front) at Top Dead Center on the compression stroke. Take the spark plug out, cover the hole with your thumb, and turn the engine until you feel the air forced out of the hole. Now look at the fan pulley, there should be a pair of notches close to a pointer (on the left side of the engine, in front of the govenor). Turn the engine back or forth until the pointer lines up with the first notch as it rotates over the top of the pulley. Now loosen the bolt at the base of the distributor and turn it until the points just start to open. That's when it will fire, the rotor should point to the wire connected to #1. Now make sure you have the wires attached to the cap in the right order 1-3-4-2. You should be close enough that it will start.
