Total resistance (sum of coil and resistor) should be about 2.75 ohms for a 12 volt system. Doesn't matter if the resistor is internal or external. The coil you have now is probably about 1.5 ohms by itself. If you replace it with a coil that has an internal resistor you won't need the external one to get the 2.75 ohms.
