If it had not been changed to 12 volts the coil should be 6 volts. I would check the ignition switch to make sure you have current through it, some of them are kinda touchy as they get old. If that is good, you hve current to the coil, you might check the points and condenser next. Seems like most times coils fail gradually, or just don't work when they get hot.
