Nobody got around to saying the factory coil on any H is 6v. If the small connections are on the opposite end from the big connection, it is a 6v coil. Most coils are 6v and require an external resistor to run on a 12v battery. This is true of all GM coils until they went to electronic ignition. The coil supply wire was a resistor to drop the voltage to 6v. If you need a replacement coil, and you are using 12v, get a resistor made for ignition systems from the auto parts store and wire it into the supply to the coil from the ignition switch and buy a new 6v coil. I have had trouble with 12v coils (they have an internal resistor) and with the external resistor you and the next owner will know to use a 6v coil.
