The gear is made out of pot metal, not even a good grade of aluminum. They shed teeth due to torsional rattle. In other words the crap metal simply gets beat up due to engine rotational uneveness. This is normal vibration caused by the speeding up and slowing down of crankshaft because of compression and power stroke. The heavy flywheel helps but doesn't elimate this pulsing. This gear only is needed if trans is in neutral and gears aren't moving. Also the latest version has a bronze bushing in it for better lasting fit on the shaft. I used one from a 1956 "200" in my 1941 "BN".
