If you get smoke while you're cranking your problem probably isn't the pump or injecters. Its most likely low compression. The 361 is a short stroke engine and doesn't generate a lot of heat when cranking. Heat makes a diesel run. Some of the compression is getting past the rings,but another problem is the valves wearing into the seats and sinking into the cylinder head and causing a lower compression ratio. There are specs for what is called VALVE STANDOUT.
