806: Jurry-Rigged Gas Line?

I went up to my place in northern Wisconsin to burn some wood piles yesterday, but there was way too much snow (up to my knees). I hobbled around a little and saw a lot of fresh deer tracks and beds and even saw a deer at the far end of the property. It was a beautiful sight, with the sun and snow. Anyway, as long as I was there, I decided to remove the gas line from my 806 gas tractor because there is a slow gas leak at the gas line fitting that attaches to the sediment bowl. After removing the gas line (5/16" OD copper), I studied the fitting and was wondering if it is correct, or if someone installed an incorrect fitting there, thus the reason for the leak. The fitting on the gas line consisted of a brass threaded fitting and a separate ferrule as is normally found associated with a compression fitting. The strange thing is that the end of a compression fitting is normally concave to receive the ferrule, and this fitting did not appear to have the concave shape. I would like to hear from anyone that might know about the correct fitting configuration. Of course, I did not check with the IH delaer. That would be too easy. I plan to replace the gas line and fitting with a 5/16" steel tube line designed for automotive brake application. The ends of the steel line are flanged and seat against the fittings supplied with the line. It appears as though the fitting will screw right into the sediment bowl. If it doesn't seal up, then I will cut off the flanged end of the steel tube, throw away the fitting that it came with, and use a regular 5/16" compression ferule and fitting (kind of like what was on the gas line that I took off).
