How I was able to tell was to remove the front spark plug and place my thumb over the hole while someone turned the motor over by hand.On the compression stroke you will feel it push air with force up against your thumb. You will know the exhaust valve is closed and the intake also to make the compression. When it is at the top of the stroke you can shine a light in the spark plug hole and see the piston at the top. Your mark on the flywheel should be lined up as well as the punch marks you refered to. Should be ready to time.If I left something out I'm sure one of the experts can give a little better discription. Hope it helped
