I had a mechanic do the replacement of the piston and O ring on the 424 I had. He did not remove the unit from the tractor. In fact he did not even drain the hydraulic fluid. He did it by feel. I think you can do it without taking the unit off the tractor if you drain the fluid which you apparently have already done. Just take the cover off and go to work. My 424 had a leather seal on the piston, not an O ring. The mechanic was going to take the piston to a machine shop to have a groove cut for an O ring, but the piston was worn too much. A new piston from IH costs over $200. Believe it or not! This quy new his business. He went and got a piston from the Mahindra dealer which fits. The Mahindra is a copy of the 424 in many ways. That piston cost $80. I sold the tractor a short while after this work was done, but I knew who had it for the next couple of years and the lift worked fine for that amount of time. Hope this helps.

I’m par
