Wayne, my B has a rod about 12 or so inches long, connected to the starter switch on one end and the other end hangs under the gas tank. Push with your foot to start it. It looks original to me, though I've seen other araingements that look original too. Mine's a 1940. There may have been several changes over the years and later models may be the ones that are different.
