Sounds like you have the washer interfering with the ball bearing that takes the thrust from the worm gear. If you put a washer in there, it has to have a hole big enough to not contact the inner bearing race or the nut that holds the bearing in. Or did you put the washer under the castle nut that holds the bearing in?? That would be the place to put it. In that case, the washer must contact only the inner race of the bearing. If everything is right, you should be able to tighten the big pipe plug up real tight and it should not affect the steering. Don't know much about the AV, but I guess the steering box is the same as the Super A. I think you need to take the worm gear out and put you a new ball bearing in. It is probably worn, causing your steering play. If it is like the Super A, take off the steering wheel, take the plug out of the steering gear and then screw out the worm gear. You will see the bearing held on the end with a castle nut and a cotter pin. Go get a new bearing (the bearing costs less than $10) and put it on there. If the castle nut does not tighten the bearing tight against the worm gear, put a washer under the castle nut, but make sure the washer contacts only the inner race and not the outer.
