We still built a few narrow frt ends as late as the X86 series. 786 & 886's. We only built about 10 per year, mostly special order. They had special frt wheels & tires, 7.5L-15's. There was an engineering change to the frt bolster that made it more difficult to build these, The pivot point for the wide frt became part of the bolster instead of bolting together as 2 pcs. I think we made about a dozen 686's a yr. as narrow frts too. Lots of tractor pullers used to use the narrow frts too because they were light. I've used narrow frts for thousands of hours, under loaders, You name it! I prefer them over wide frts, but WF's have their place, like plowing, and WF's ride smoother. I wish IH would have made something similar to the roll-a-matic narrow frt end another brand used. Plus You can store more narrow frt end tractors than WF's in the same space!
