Kendall: Thanks for your response. I rechecked this morning and tried some different things. The voltage at the coil was about 7.4 volts, I checked and the points were closed. I then checked the arc that would be observed when the coil wire that goes into the distributor was held about 1/4" from a ground. It arced across real well. I then took a plug wire and held it a little closer than 1/4" and it did fine also. I checked the timing and found it to good. When I started it, it ran rich, even backfired once, and sputtered when idling. I guess I am back to the blasted carb. Wish I could find a spare one that I could borrow for a bit. IH is really proud of their new ones. I hate to buy one and find out it something else entirely. Anyway, am getting a lot of spare parts accumulated, points, condenser, rotors, distributor cap, coil, plug wires, and all. Can't afford to sell it now, so willl keep trying until it runs like it should. Thanks again.

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
