Gibby: You do need a couple of special tools for the job, and if yours is like mine, it won't come apart easily. A 2" combination wrench worked on the retaining nut, but getting it into position wasn't fun. You should invest in a good puller to get the brake drum off, if you don't have one already - might wait until you've got the cover off to make sure whatever you've got/will buy will fit. I think the Farmall 300 is like my 300U in the PTO department. If so, once you've got all the bolts out to take the cover off, the only thing holding the PTO housing onto the rear end of the tractor is the o-ring between it and the transmission. If you aren't careful, you might end up breaking it loose, and have an unscheduled draining of your transmission fluid. You probably will want to replace the cover gasket and PTO shaft seal while you're in there - pretty cheap in comparison to the bands. The retaining nut and lock washer were badly bunged up in mine (somebody used a chisel instead of a wrench to tighten the retainer), and I ended up replacing them also. Good luck!
