DJ - you called it right on! (And my own experience with several failures supports it...) With this design the alternator is not restrained from vibrating in a hozontal plane - the pivot bolt will fatigue and break at the point the alterator pivot and the bracket meet. I've found it takes 100+ hours of running before the bolt snaps...but sooner or later it will. If you're lucky the alternator stays out of the fan when it does! Solution is to provide a bracket design that supports the alternator pivot BOTH front and rear. Note: The mounting setup in the photos has a really slick belt tensioning idler setup - that part of the design is very nicely done!
