How old is old? A lot of improvement during WW2 came into engines and that trend has continued. I'll say that diesels are built better. A major item is the operator. Some people can trash anything in a few years. The 40's and 50's engines often did not have hour meters so that would be guessing for them. No matter what hours are quoted there will be exceptions for sure. I watched a real nice running 1947 MD doing some loader work awhile back and it has never had the head off. Many thousands of hours but VERY well cared for. Other coment should be interesting.
