This is one man's opinion. On normally serviced and maintained engines, gas engines do not last as long as diesel. This is pretty well accepted. Hours between new and needing overhauled on a gas engine will vary but somewhere between 3000 and 4000 hours the engine will start showing need of attention. Oil consumption and oil smoke will become apparent. On a diesel engine that is serviced and maintained the hours will be different than gas. Engine operating RPMs have a big impact. For this reason many JD engines will need overhauling at 4000 to 4500 hours because the engines run faster and wear accordingly. Our machines make 540 rpm at the PTO at lower RPMs and it is not uncommon for the IH to last 6000+ hours before wear starts to be noticeable. Many of the engines will continue to maintain good oil pressure but show some blow by and increased oil consumption. Where and when to overhaul is a personal thing and many will tolerate higher oil consumption and poor cranking, therefore the time to overhaul will remain a variable. Need and economics usually dictate the interval between major engine overhauls
