The first three numbers (231)are the"KIND", the next three (0011)are the "CODE", The next digit (B)is the country of manufacture (Britain at Doncaster, England). The next number(107251)is the serial number. This is the 7251st 454 built after the serial numbering system was changed in 1973.There were close to 8000 of them built from late 1970 to early 1973.The early ones serial number started at 501 and went up to 8313. When the serial numbering system changed they started with 100001. This coincided with the introduction of the 464 in the USA and Canada and the discontinuing of the 454 in the US. The 454 was sold through to the end of 1977 outside the USA. Yours is a 1976 model. I am not sure what the "X" stands for. IH sometimes used the same code for different items on different tractors. Ken Updike's book identifies the "X" as for "High Speed Low and Reverse". I have also seen the X used for other designations on other tractors
