I converted my father in law's '56 IHC S-180 from 6 volt generator to 12 volt alternator about 20 years ago. Besides installing an alternator, 12 volt battery and replacing all the lamps, the rest of the electrical loads (starter, electric 2-speed axle, wipers, heater fan and gages) were left as is. Truck worked great after the conversion - started and electric axle shifted MUCH more reliably on 12 volts. Email me if you have questions - I'll help if I can... Bob M
