The answer is as follows. The 454, 574, and 674 were all made in England for the non US market. For the US market IH brought in skid transmissions front axles, and sheet metal from Doncaster. They also brought in diesel engines from the Neuss plant in Germany. The gas engine alternator, starter, wiring, gauges, seat, tires and rims, mufflers, batteries, etc were all made in the US to the same specification as the Doncaster units. Assembly of all these parts was done at Louisville. This was enough to make it qualify as a US built tractor. The way you can tell the US built variety from the British built variety is by the U (for USA) in the serial. The British built models had a B (for British)in the same spot in the serial number. Note that Case IH does the same thing with the MX Maxxums MX100-MX135. The bring in skid transmissions and some cab parts from St. Dizier, France, and assemble it in Racine with American built engines, two wheel drive front ends, etc. Case (now Landini) also assembles the MX100-MX135 series in Doncaster England for sale outside North America.
