Hey Jake - It all depends! Key consideration is whether you're gonna use your tractor for work or for play/show.

If the answer is work, an alternator is the only way to go. It's pretty much maintenance free and will provide lots of juice to charge the battery at low speeds. Also 12 volts provides reliable starting in the most unfavorable (cold) weather conditions. And alternators, 12 volt maintenance-free batteries and 12 volt lights are available everywhere and are relatively cheap.

On the other hand if you're tractor is used only for show or fun, stock 6 volts is probably preferred. So long as the electrics are kept in top condition and the motor is in good tune, it'll start and run fine with the stock 6 volt system. And there's just something cool about a 6 volt motor slowly tipping over on the starter, then firing up. But the 6 volt will require more maintenance - battery to keep watered, cables and connections must be kept in 1st class shape, mechanical regulators are fussy and expensive to replace, etc.

Kinda in the middle is a 12 volt generator rewind. This provides most of the functional advantages of an alternator - exceptions being low speed charging capacity and reliability. But if done right it will look like factory stock.
