The one we bought did not have a loader but it does now. We bought a loader for it for $15 and put it on it needed a coat of paint but it was in good shape. We have been useing it all winter to load round bales and it has been working great. One thing I know is that our 656 that was hydro, when the hydro went out it did not go out all the way it was good for like and hour. It would run great then it would start slipping and then stop you would just have to shut it off and leave it there till it cooled off then it would go again. What part of PA are you from? I know a guy who has a really good 656 hydro that was for sale it has a wide front and is really clean. But I don't remember what he was asking for it. As to what to check: try to go and look at it on a cold morning, see if it will start. I know I have seen some that start right up but as soon as it get below frezing forget it they will not start. See if he has to plug it in or use ether. I know that it is hard on those 656 engins. Make sure if you are going to use it for brush hoging that the hydrolics are not leaking and that they will stop half way up and stay there they don't work there way back down to the ground. Check the hydraulics by looking at the back of the tractor by the vavle controle box, make sure it is not leaking. It is not expencive to fix but just a pain. If you are going to be useing it to load see if it has the heavy duty front axel or just the regular front axel. One of ours has the heavy duty and the other has the regular front axel. If you are going to be doing a lot of loading then you may want the heavy duty front axel. On the front axel see if it is worn, see if you can move the axel back and forth by hand while the tractor is still. Over all they are great tractors, we took the engin out of our hydro and put it in the gear tractor wow did it make a differnce. They put bigger engins in the hydros. Let me tell you I can run circles round our 1066 with this tractor. $5500 is probley what the tractor is worth. I don't think you are getting taken but you are also not stealing it. Just if the hydro is junk then you have a pile of junk but if it is good then you have a good tractor. People eather love hydros or hate them.
