Cub fan mount broken

My question is if breakage of the "ears" that the fan mounts to on the front cover is a common problem and what precautions may be helpfull to prevent breakage.

I am helping dad (90 years old) with his late 40's Cub. He bought it in early 50's and re-ringed it years ago. Still runs good but the fan broke and destroyed the radiator. He put a new fan and radiator on and soon after startup one of the "ears" on the front cover broke off, sending the fan back into the radiator. A neighbor welded the ear back on, then it broke again. (Guess what happened to the radiator)

I have bought a used front cover to fix it with this time as dad has given up. He wanted to sell it but I convinced him to give it to me as I can't bear to see it go. I told him I would fix and maintain it for him.
