Positive ground USED to be the standard, Now it's negative ground. Makes no difference as to the voltage. Where the confusion comes from is due to the fact that most of the 6-volt vehicles were positive ground and most 12-volt are negative ground. Just happened to make the change at the same time. Starters don't care about which ground they are. Coils don't much either, just change the wires around. Of course, mechanical guages and light bulbs really don't get upset about such small matters either. A generator's regulator can go either way, that's why you must polarize it when replacing parts. An alternator can only go one way, and that's generally 12-volt negative ground.
