Those old saws didn't run at a high rpm or need a really tight belt so I don't think something happening to the belt is a big worry. You main worry is the blade. You want to make sure any guards are in place, the saw frame is in good condition, fastened to the ground solidly and have good footing around the work area. The rest is paying attention to what you're doing and keep kids and any adults who don't understand the potential danger of the saw away. A sharp blade is aways better than a dull one. You want to be sure the wood you're sawing hasn't come from somewhere it could contain nails.A lot of wood has been cut safely with buzz saws but at the same time a number of fools have been hurt.
