Another advantage of a magneto is that it permits extended engine operation at idle/low speed without running down the battery. (A distributor draws 3 or 4 amps at all times - run a battery ignition tractor all day at low speed and you'll wind up with a dead battery...) My experience had been if you keep a magneto clean and properly lubricated, it's as reliable as a distributor.
