Way back when, general motors had 6v. batterys they were neg. ground.Chrysler products as well as Ford motor were pos. ground in the mid 50's they went to 12v. at about that time Transistors were just coming into being along with primitive electronics and they needed neg. ground so the switch was made at that time. As Delco, Autolite and Prestolite supplied the auto industry it just made sense to make all alike to save $$$. the leftover production as well as the time they took to ramp up to 12v. production supplies lasted into the early 60's and in 63' er' so they went to alt. to replace generators and took a few more yrs. to do this .
