John, when you reverse the polarity, the electricity still goes in the out the dist. and into the spark plug the same way it did before the reversal. Even the starter motor spins the same direction it did before reversal IF it is NOT a permanently magnatized starter, and I do not think any old tractors were. The elect. still goes into the starter the same way and "out" the same way. I got into a big and on going discussion with a young engineer friend who said if I changed the polarity (which I was doing), the starter would turn "backwards" It did not for the reason stated above. I have converted several tractors from 6v pos. ground to 12v neg ground, and reversing the polarity usually only intails changing the leads on the coil and the amp meter( so it show plus when charging--if you do not change, it will show minus when in fact, it is charging.
