966 split and tranny fluid

I have two questions regarding a 966. First, how much fluid is the tranny/rear-end/shaft-tube assembly supposed to hold? We drained only 12 gallons, but it seems like there should be 3 times that. Second, my friend and I are splitting this tractor at the transmission, just under the console. We have it about 3/4" apart and it feels like something in roughly the middle is catching. There appears to be a shaft towards the bottom that passes through and it's not yet clear. Are we missing something? Do we need to pull an inspection cover or the console and unbolt something or is it just a tough deal? Thanks, Chris B.
