Jim is right about having the valves placed correctly in the cylinder head. That's where the compression can be lost and that makes any diesel start hard. Craig, as I read your posting you indicated that it starts hard when warm and I'm sure that it gets worst the hotter it gets. Your problem is the injection pump is not delivering fuel to the cylinders when it's hot. Watch the exhaust pipe while cranking and if there is not much smoke when she is warm your problem is the hydraulic head in the injection pump is wore out. When an injection pump shop rebuilds the pump that's one of the checks that is performed on the pump. The pump shop checks the amount of fuel that's being delivered at cranking speed when the pump is hot. Good luck I know what I told you will cost $$$ but that's your problem.
