Having worked for an IH dealer and construction company who exclusively used IH trucks, I can honestly tell you from experience that these trucks equiped with inline 6 cyl. 2 stroke detroit engines were extremely gutless unless equiped with 6.5 or steeper gears. Turbo charged models were marginally better, V turbo charged series 92 engines were markedly better than inlines but still won't set the world on fire. The truck itself is a very tough unit if equiped with fuller transmission and 40,000 rear axles or heavier. These engines have a very narrow torque band and usually require many gears when hauling heavy loads. 10 to 13 speed desirable even when hauling silage. Check dump cylinder for scoring, chrome deterioration, and major leaks, and hinge points for major wear. Brakes are a subject I could go on about for pages, so use your head, but these trucks usually had electrical problems. (wiring harnesses, harness plugs, switches, power feed problems, etc.) Feel free to email if more information desired.
