I used to work on Mack Diesel engines, the earlier ones had studs and nuts, the later ones bolts for the head. We used to change all the studs and nuts to the bolts. Makes it easier to work on other things (injectors, etc.) on the top of the head. We never had any problems with the ones we changed. We always used grade 8 bolts with a hardened flat washer underneath. But the bolts do have different torque value than the studs and nuts. I've also changed a few L-head engines over and never had any problems with them. Personally I think the bolts hold clamping load better than studs and nuts. I seem to have less leaks with bolts than with studs and nuts. It also seems that when you go to remove studs and nuts, the stud always winds out with nut firmly in place.
