Ah HA! Sombody has the same proablem I had with our 544, uses the same linkage system. I did a lot of work rebuilding ours but a quick fix might be to unbolt that plate and put a one inch long 1/4 bolt on top of the spring. this shims the spring and the threaded section keeps the shim in place. As I replaced the springs as well this made for a very positive shift. Back in Dec I posted about this repair so check that out as well. Post back with the results, Ill try and help from this end.
