I just finished replacing the clutch in my A a few weeks ago. Between the pressure plate (has the little springs mounted in/on it) and the flywheel, there is a friction disk. You can get to it by removing the pressure plate from the flywheel. Looking at it will tell you if the clutch is worn. More likely, the worn component in the clutch system will be the throughout bearing. If it is loose and wobbling, its shot. After replacing the clutch in my A, it needed to be adjusted. I am not sure how it would get out of adjustment by simply splitting the tractor, but I guess it could happen. It can be adjusted by moving the nuts on the treaded clutch rod that can be accessed through a hole in the bottom of the bellhousing tube, almost straight below the steering wheel bracket. Hope this helps.
