Tyman, I removed the fan assembly from my A recently. It was just as easy to remove three nuts and two hose clamps and take the radiator off than to try and squeeze the fan out without removing it. If you are taking off the grill, shrowd, and top mounting bracket anyway, why not just remove the nuts at the bottom of the radiator and take it completely off. I gives you LOTS more working room. (You'll just have to loosten the generator/alternator to get the belt off, not completely remove it) Just my $.02 Good luck.
