Primary advantage of the regulator over a cutout is a regulator does just that - automatically controls charging rate. This pretty much eliminates the risk of over/undercharging the battery as is the case with a cutout and charge control headlight switch setup. You can safely drill and tap the generator housing to mount a regulator. Recommend however not drilling all the way thru and using a bottoming tap to cut the threads. Otherwise you run the chance of drilling thru a field winding, etc. inside the generator if you pick the wrong spot.
