Farmall H Tranny Shifter Boot? Gasket? What keeps dirt out?

I pulled the two ton cover off of the tranny of my 1942 H last Sunday. The forks refused to move. On closer inspection, I found that rust had filtered down from the shifter and settled into the shifter forks.

Question:

Is there boot that goes over all of this, or does one just need to completely cover that area in grease?

It looks like there is really no seal or gasket around this area. Any suggestions on ways to keep out the rust and dirt from filtering down around the shifter? Thanks for any help.
