My 300U had a similar problem. Mine turned out that it was junk in the gas tank plugging the hole into the sediment bowl. On mine the part sticking up a little bit in the tank had rusted off level with the bottom of the tank so junk could easily get into it. I've also had my M sound like that when the points and condenser were bad, if I got it to start at all.
